Understanding Means Rebuilding

An idea is understood only when it can be reconstructed from the ground up in one's own terms — repeating the accepted words, however fluently, is memory wearing the costume of knowledge.

Sees first: Whether the speaker, himself included, can derive the claim independently, explain it through a concrete case, and answer the next question down — or whether the account collapses the moment it leaves the memorized path.

The Easiest Mark Is in the Mirror

Self-deception is the default failure of intelligent people, so scientific integrity means actively hunting the ways your own conclusion could be wrong and reporting them before anyone asks.

Sees first: What the account leaves out — the checks skipped, the alternative explanations unmentioned, the data that did not fit — and whether the person wanted the conclusion before the evidence arrived.

The Name Is Not the Thing

Knowing what something is called and knowing what it does are different achievements, and technical vocabulary is where the difference hides — from others and from yourself.
